2012 VINTAGE - EXCEPTIONAL, 5 STARS
"Aromatic and very distinct in character (pear, apple, lime, candied lemon, honey), it is full bodied, crisp, and very long on the finish, with toasty, spicy oak overtones (vanilla, cedar). Great value. Aged 9 months in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. Exceptional Chardonnay. 5 Stars!"
- Restaurant Wine, Ronn Weigand, Master of Wine, Master Sommelier, August 2014
2011 VINTAGE - EXCELLENT, 4 STARS
"Crisp, complex, and understated in style; a medium full
bodied Chardonnay with elegant fruit character (pear, peach, lemon peel, melon), firm acidity, and a crisp, long finish. Great value."
- Restaurant Wine, Issue #147-149, 2013
2011 VINTAGE - EXCELLENT
"Bright yellow-gold. Fresh melon and nectarine on the nose and palate, with a honeyed nuance adding depth. Broad and fleshy, with good heft to its melon and pit fruit flavors. Shows a touch of warmth on the finish, which leaves candied ginger and peach pit notes behind."
- Stephen Tanzers' International Wine Cellar, May/June 2013
2009 VINTAGE - GOOD VALUE!
– Wine Enthusiast Magazine
2009 VINTAGE - 89 POINTS
"The Textbook 2009 Chardonnay exhibits lots of poached pear, crushed rock/mineral and white peach notes, very good acidity and a perfumed, elegant style. A very good wine, displaying degrees of finesse and flavor. A new discovery for me, this offering from Jonathan and Susan Pey performed admirably in peer group tastings."
– Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Finally, a “regular” growing season! After three unusual years, 2012 brought us back to a normal year with excellent results across the board. The characteristics of the 2012 vintage in Napa Valley showcase concentrated fruit, rich mouth-feel and exotic aromatics, all within a balanced framework of crisp acidity. The even weather patterns in September and October allowed harvest to occur at a more relaxed pace, which is always good for high-quality winemaking.
Our Napa Valley Chardonnay comes from two superb Napa Valley sites. The first is located in the Los Carneros AVA, near the cold San Pablo Bay and represents eighty percent of our release. Its long, cool season brings rich, tropical and stone fruit aromas and flavors. The second site represents twenty percent of the blend, is located at the Yountville Crossroads, and is over 25 years old. These rugged, older vines deliver a fraction of the yield of today’s more prolific clones, but what is offered is exceptional, offering texture and aromatic complexity.
Hand-picked Chardonnay clusters were field sorted into half-ton bins between September 26 and October 2, then gravity-transferred into the press where a gentle whole cluster press cycle delivered a modest 155 gallons per ton. After settling, the juice was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless tanks and new French barrels. Cultured yeasts completed the indigenous fermentation. Nine months tank and new French barrel maturation (20% new) along with several battonage series (lees stirring) and malo in many of the lots helped develop layered texture and its classic mouth-feel. Creamy, deep and balanced, it expresses this celebrated vintage perfectly.
TEXTBOOK Napa Valley Chardonnay shows bright, textured fruit, subtle new French oak and a rich, creamy texture; all in balance with fragrant and floral pear, melon and mineral notes. We think it is a “textbook” example of this noble variety grown in these outstanding Napa Valley sub-appellations.
